Maritime Traveler, the last living horse by Secretariat, died peacefully Sunday, July 27 at the age of 35 at Bridlewood Farm in Ocala, Florida according to several reports.
Purchased for $55,000 by Arthur and Martha Appleton as a yearling at the 1981 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Maritime Traveler never broke his maiden in five starts.
After his career, the Appletons returned Maritime Traveler to Bridlewood where he had a long career serving as the legendary farm’s teaser for 25 years.
Patricia McQueen, author of the book Secretariat’s Legacy, wrote in a report for Thoroughbred Racing Commentary that Maritime Traveler was laid to rest in the farm’s cemetery.
“We laid him to rest in Bridlewood’s cemetery Sunday morning, alongside all of our other horses that were near and dear to our people and our hearts,” Bridlewood General Manager George Isaacs said in the Thoroughbred Racing Commentary story.
