Although both Fede and Bee A Queen come into Saturday’s $75,000 Azalea at Gulfstream Park off victories in their last out, both are listed as outside shots in the seven-furlong test for 3-year-old fillies. Stephen Screnci’s homebred Fede is listed at 10-1 on the morning line while Mark Cherry’s Bee a Queen is 20-1 in the program.
Fede has been reliable throughout her eight-race career spent entirely at Gulfstream Park.
Among her three wins are two in her last three races, most recently taking a first condition, $75,000 optional claiming by nearly two lengths going a mile on May 23. She also won by two-and-half lengths three stats back racing seven furlongs against first level allowance fillies bred in Florida on March 20. Between the two victories was a respectable third in a first condition, $75,000 optional claiming won by Azelea entrant Nerazurri at seven furlongs on April 20.
Fede has finished in the top thee in six of her eight career starts while $144,230. She is by Ocala Stud stallion Adios Charlie out of Rainfall, by Blame.
Emisael Jaramillo, who has ridden Fede in her last two races, again has the assignment from trainer Armando De La Cerda. Fede has have drawn post six.
Bee a Queen most recently defeated maiden special weight fillies and mares going seven furlongs on June 14 in her eighth career start, all at Gulfstream.
Trained by Jena Antonucci, Bee a Queen also has a second and a third with earnings of $68,410. The bay filly is a graduate of Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company where she was purchased by Cerasus Thoroughbreds for $75,000 at the 2024 March Sale of 2-year-olds in training out of the de Meric Sales consignment.
Bee A Queen is by leading Florida sire Khozan, who stands in Florida at Ocala Stud. She is out of the Uncle Mo mare Queen Brunette and was bred in Florida by Tami Bobo.
Jose Morelos has ridden her throughout her career and will again be in the saddle from post two.
Run at Calder Race Course from 1983 – 2013 before moving to Gulfstream in 2014, the Azalea has been won by a Florida-bred 14 times. Charlie’s Wish is the most recent Florida-bred winner of the Azalea in 2023.
Ana’s Promise has been tabbed as the morning line favorite at odds of 9-5 after finishing fifth in the Grade 1 Longiness Kentucky Oaks at nine furlongs on May 2 and third in the $168,000 Monomoy Girl going a mile-and-sixteenth on June 14, both at Churchill Downs.
Trained by Carlos David for Bell Racing LLC, Anna’s Promise was second to Five G in the Grade 2 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Park Oaks going a mile-and-sixteenth on March 29 after winning a first level, $75,000 optional claiming at that distance on March 6.
David claimed Anna’s Promise for $50,000 out of a maiden optional claiming win going seven furlongs at Gulfstream in February.
Anna’s Promise is by Promises Fullfilled, by Paynter and has won two with three seconds and a third in 10 starts. She has earned $209,754.
Edwin Gonzalez will ride from post five.
Saffie Joseph Jr. will saddle Luvumorgan, winner of the $75,000 Game Face going six-and-a-half furlongs at Gulfstream on May 31. She has won two of three races in her career including a mile-and-a-sixteenth maiden special weight for fillies on March 2 at Gulfstream.
Luvumorgan has earned $87,250 for owners Shining Stables LLC, Steven Friedfertig and Miller Racing LLC.
Edgard Zayas will guide Luvumorgan from the inside post one and they are 2-1 in the program.
Rouding out the field are Andrea, second to Luvumorgan in the Game Face and to be ridden by Miguel Vasquez; Jonathan Ocasio rides Unchained Elaine, winner of the $102,000 Any Limit in March; and Neruzurri with Edgar Perez in the saddle.
