JUNE 28, 2014—A three-time participant in the Kelly’s Landing Stakes at Churchill Downs, Florida-bred Good Lord won the 2014 edition at age seven in his second attempt in the seven-furlong test for 3-year-olds and older. Trained throughout his career by Forrest Kaelin for Thomas D. Shank and Stan Young, Good Lord was fourth in the 2013 Kelly’s Landing won by Right to Vote and third in the 2015 running won by Viva Majorca.
After winning for the first time in his fourth start in 2014 by taking a second level, $62,500 optional claiming by three lengths at Churchill Downs in May, Good Lord was made the second choice in the wagering at 5-2. Pass the Dice, who has just finished third in the Grade 3 Hanshin Cup at Arlington for trainer Wayne Catalano, was the 6-5 favorite.
But Pass the Dice nor any of the other seven starters put up much of a fight against Good Lord and jockey Brian Hernandez, Jr., who were two-and-a-half lengths in front of Captain Genius through two furlongs in :22.61. Pass the Dice emerged from between horses on the turn to get within a length-and-a-half after a half-mile in :45 but Good Lord kicked clear again to win by nearly three lengths in 1:22.45 on the fast track. Pass the Dice was second with Cozzetti third.
Good Lord paid $7.20 to win and improved his record to 12 wins in 59 starts.
In his next start, Good Lord won the $50,000 Don Bernhardt at Ellis Park for the third time after winning that race in 2012 and 2013.
Later in 2014, he took the $130,000 Mountaineer Mile (Listed) at Mountaineer Park, a race he had also won in 2012.
Good Lord raced until September of his 9-year-old year, retiring with earnings of $803,305 from 15 wins, 10 seconds and 14 thirds in 84 starts.
Good Lord was by Greatness out of Dowager Lady, by Whadjathink and was bred in Florida by Marilyn Fazo Seltzer. He was the only stakes winner for Dowager Lady but was a full-brother to Florida-bred Lord of Greatness, an earner of $591,327 and winner of 18 from 74 career starts. Lord of Greatness was also bred by Seltzer. Purchased in foal to Hold That Tiger for $15,000 by Seltzer at the 2005 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale, Dowager Lady produced four winners from four starters and five foals.
