Gene Gray Corbin passed away August, 15, 2024. He was born May, 21, 1941 in Old Town, Fla., to Willie Orbie Corbin and Willie Mae Long Corbin.
Corbin discovered a love for horses at an early age. This passion led him to pursue a lifelong career as a Thoroughbred horseman. He started at Rosemere Farm, the first thoroughbred farm in Marion County. He worked at Quail Roost Farm as well as Hobeau Farm for many years before he began training for Shade Tree Farm until he retired in his late 70s.
He made a significant impact in the Thoroughbred industry in Marion County. Known for his deep understanding and strict training regiment, he guided many horses to success including Florida-breds Three Rules, the FTBOA Horse of the Year in 2016; and Imperial Hint, the FTBOA Horse of the Year in 2018, to name a few.
Gene’s dedication to the craft earned him respect and admiration from all who had the privilege of working with him. He was even a finalist for the 2018 TIEA leadership in racing award.
Beyond his professional life, he was a cherished member of the community. He was known for his warm heart, his willingness to share knowledge with others and his love for college football. Go Gators!
Gene always had a song in his head and enjoyed playing guitar and singing country music tunes. He was an avid fisherman but most importantly a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend.
He is preceded in death by his parents Orb and Willie Mae Corbin, siblings Billy Corbin, Catherine Worley, Thomas Corbin and granddaughter, Tiffany Tate.
He is survived by his sister Ruth Mitchell, daughters Rene Ricks (Steve), Regena Panek (Rich), Teresa Corbin Bach, (Greg Miller) and Kimberlie Corbin; as well as seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, who will forever cherish the memories of his wisdom, guidance and love.
He leaves behind a legacy not only in the horses he trained but in the lives he touched along the way.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024 at 3pm at Cherrysink Church of Christ located at 5450 SW CR 334 Trenton, Fla.
