FLORIDA GAMING CONTROL COMMISSION PRESS RELEASE
TALLAHASSEE, FL—March is recognized as Problem Gambling Awareness Month and the Florida Gaming Control Commission is highlighting free, confidential resources available to Floridians struggling with compulsive gambling. The state of Florida funds Playwise, which provides 24/7 confidential counseling, referrals and support services. Playwise operates a toll-free bilingual helpline at 833-PLAYWISE and a resource website at www.playwise.org.
Problem gambling affects individuals of all ages and backgrounds, and its consequences extend far beyond just the financial impact. It can lead to emotional distress, strained relationships, job loss, and other serious personal and social challenges. Florida remains committed to early intervention, prevention, and ensuring accessible support for those in need.
“Raising awareness is important,” FGCC Executive Director Alana Zimmer said. “We must let people know that resources are available to help them when facing this issue. When individuals understand the warning signs of problem gambling and know where to find vital assistance, we help build a healthier and stronger Florida.”
Problem gambling can be difficult to recognize, but common warning signs may include:
- Spending more money or time on gambling than intended
- Hiding gambling behavior from family or friends
- Chasing losses or borrowing money to gamble
- Feeling anxious, irritable, or distressed when not gambling
On March 10, as part of Problem Gambling Awareness Month, the nation observes Gambling Disorder Screening Day. The FGCC encourages Floridians who think they may have a gambling problem to take the time to call 833-PLAYWISE or visit www.playwise.org to learn more about screening tools and available support services. Help is available for anyone who may be struggling with a gambling addiction.
