Florida-bred King Cab and jockey Reynier Arrieta went right to the front and never looked back to win the $50,000 Work All Week at Hawthorne Sunday at odds of 19-1. The 6-year-old son of Noble Bird defeated four other 3-year-olds and older going six furlongs in winning his first added-money contest since taking the $110,000 OBS Sophomore on Florida Cup Day at Tampa Bay Downs in March of 2022. It was his first win since August when he was claimed out of a victorious effort against first level, $25,000 optional claimers at Gulfstream Park.
King Cab led by two-and-a-half lengths ahead of Lundberg in second through a half mile in :45.41 before 3-2 favorite Red Flag moved to his inside to challenge in the run for home. But King Cab kicked away approaching the wire to win by a length in 1:10.05 on the fast track. Navy Seal was second with Red Flag another length-and-a-quarter farther back in third. Devil’s Tour and Lundberg completed the order of finish.
King Cab paid $40.20 to win in giving trainer Heather Irion her second career stakes victory.
The chestnut gelding finished out of the money in a second level, $62,500 optional claiming won by Disco Ball at Oaklawn on March 29 in his first start for Irion but then produced two third-place finishes in second level, $25,000 optional claiming races at Fonner Park on April 26 and May 17.
He improved his career record to six wins, four seconds and five thirds in 25 starts and increased his earnings to $358,692. He was a $110,000 purchase by Laurie Plesa, David E. Melin and Leon Ellman as a 2-year-old in training at the 2021 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company June Sale where he was consigned by Ocala Stud.
