Antonucci, Brennan, Fernung and Gantt Among Thoroughbred Industry Honorees
Ollin Women International honored 12 women in Marion County, Fla., in the field of equine for their excellence, leadership and impact as part of International Women’s Day on March 7 at the College of Central Florida Klein Center.
Four honored from the Thoroughbred industry include Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association’s Tammy A. Gantt; Jena Antonucci, the first woman trainer to win a Thoroughbred Triple Crown race with her victory in the 2024 Belmont (Grade 1) and HorseOlogy co-founder; Journeyman Stud’s Crystal Fernung; and Furlong Thoroughbred retirement program founder Stephanie Brennan, who along with her husband Niall operates Niall Brennan Stables.
Four of the honorees work specifically with equine therapy outreach programs including Stirrups and Strides director Betty Gray; Marion Therapeutic Riding program’s Jenna Rovira, a PATH International certified therapeutic riding instructor; Conway Arabian’s Lori Conway, who furnishes her stallion for reading programs; and the multiple award-winning Gentle Carousel Miniatures’ Debbie Garcia-Bengochea.
Three honorees are connected to equine media including Horse Capital Television host Barbara Hooper; Horse Talk Show founder Louisa Barton; and Gantt who hosts and serves as executive producer for The Florida Horse Podcast on behalf of Florida Equine Communications.
Katherine ‘Katie’ Glynn, an equestrian specializing in personal injury with the law firm Piccin & Glynn; and Susan Gilliland, Live Oak International founder and organizing committee member, were also recognized.
“This year, we recognize women whose influence extends beyond her profession —someone who is not only respected for her expertise but also valued for her commitment to empowerment, inclusion and advocacy,” OWL President Dr. Manal Fakhoury said.
Each honoree’s impact extends into the community, whether through mentorship, volunteer work or philanthropic efforts, or investment of time, talent and resources to uplift others. Each exhibit integrity, compassion and an unwavering commitment to both horses and people.
OWI recognizes women in a different sector of business each year making 2025 the year to focus on women in the Horse Capital of the World®. The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Alberto Rullan, owner of Equine Performance Innovative Center and Performance Equine Veterinary Services (EPIC). Dr. Rullan highlighted the key role so many women play in the industry and in his practice.
“Whether through training the next generation, providing top-tier programs, or using equine-assisted therapy to heal both horses and people, the honorees embody excellence in action,” event co-chair Barbara Fitos said.
