A trio of 2-year-olds, including two by first crop sires, topped the eighth-mile works Wednesday during the first day of the Under Tack Shows previewing the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company March Sale of 2-year-olds.
Hip 119, a bay colt from the first crop by Grade 1 Clark and Grade 1 Claiborne Futurity-winner Maxfield, clocked an eighth mile :9.80 from the consignment of Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables Inc., as agent. Out of the Grade 2-placed, stakes-winning Sky Mesa mare Eyeinthesky, the colt is from the family of stakes winner and grade stakes-producer Cahill Connection.
First crop sire Charlatan, winner of the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and Grade 1 Runhappy Malibu during his career on the track, was represented by Hip 176, who also breezed an eighth-mile in :9.80. Consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, as agent, the chestnut colt is out of the Grade 3-placed mare Hang a Star, by Tapizar. Hang a Star is a half-sister to stakes-winner Empire Line and the colt is from the family of multiple Grade 1-winner Rushing Fall.
“We started with a bang. We knew that colt was fast, and it set the tone for us for the day,” Jimbo Gladwell of Top Line Sales said to the OBS press department. “It took a free-running horse to get through the wind today, I thought. We’ve got a big dose of Charlatans on the farm, and they all train well, they’re forward. I can’t say enough good things about him.”
The third colt to produce a :9.80 furlong was Hip 238, also consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, as agent. The colt is by Maclean’s Music out of the stakes-winning Florida-bred mare Katie’s Kiss, by Kantharos, a half-sister to stakes-winner Stonestreet Song and stakes-placed Truest Legend.
“Both colts prepped the same exact times, they galloped out very similar,” Gladwell said. “I don’t want to say I was expecting :9.4 but I was sure hoping for a :9.4 with the second colt. Both of them have good size, they’re balanced colts, they’ve been sound. They’ve trained great all year and got to showcase their ability in some really tough conditions today and stand out.”
Ten 2-year-olds produced eighth-mile works in :10 flat including Hip 265, a Florida-bred colt by Bolt d’Oro. Consigned by First Call, the bay colt is out of of the Indian Charlie mare Langers, a half-sister to Grade 3 Durham Cup-winner Golden Sabre and stakes-placed Strike Me Down. The colt was bred in the Sunshine State by Angela Ingenito.
Hips 19 and 245 were credited with producing the fastest quarter-mile works Wednesday in :20.80.
Hip 19 is by Connect out of the stakes-placed mare Catsadiva, by Tale of the Cat and is consigned by Hoppel LLC, as agent. Casadiva is a half-sister to Grade 3-placed, stakes-winner Message and stakes-placed John’s Success.
Hip 245 is a bay colt from the second crop by Fog of War out of the stakes-placed mare Kiss the Lady, by Quiet American. Kiss the Lady is a half-sister to graded stakes-producer Tapzig and the colt is consigned by Omar Ramirez Bloodstock as Agent.
The only :21 flat quarter-mile breeze on Wednesday was produced by Hip 188, a filly by McKinzie consigned by Hoppell LLC, as agent. She is out of Hennythelovepenny, by Henny Hughes, a half-sister to Grade 3-placed Bourbonstreetgirl, stakes-placed Bernie the Jet and stakes-producer Amaretta’s Way.
