2010 – Fred and Jane Brei’s Jacks or Better Farm’s homebred Awesome Feather completed a perfect six-for-six campaign by scoring a two-and-a-quarter length victory as the favorite in the 27th running of the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs.

In providing trainer Stanley Gold and jockey Jeffrey Sanchez with their first Breeders’ Cup victories, Awesome Feather completed the mile and a sixteenth over a fast track in 1:45.17.

Awesome Feather tracked the early pace initially set by Theyskens’ Theory and then R Heat Lightning, biding her time through fractions of :23.90 and :48.14.

After three-quarters of mile, Awesome Feather made a three-wide move after R Heat Lightning and the two arrived at the top of the stretch together.

At the three-sixteenths pole, R Heat Lightning came out slightly and brushed Awesome Feather who quickly recovered to take over at midstretch and then draw off for the victory.

“I waited and waited with my filly,” Sanchez said. “I wanted to make one move with her. When I asked her, she went. Then when we got in the stretch with R Heat Lightning and when she bumped us, my filly tried harder. She came away from that other filly.”

Awesome Feather, who earned the Eclipse Award as outstanding 2-year-old filly for 2010, had won her first five starts by a combined 23 ¼ lengths against Florida-breds. “She just kept working her way up the ladder,” Gold said.

R Heat Lightning easily held second by two-and-a-quarter lengths over Delightful Mary.
