BY BROCK SHERIDAN
OCTOBER 4, 1997—Elbert R. and Cecilia Dixon’s Nancy’s Glitter led from the start then drew off in the stretch under jockey Pedro Rodriguez to win the $450,000 My Dear Girl, the mile-and-a-sixteenth third leg of the filly division of the Florida Stallion Stakes at Calder Race Course. The Florida-bred daughter of Glitterman had won the $75,000 Desert Vixen over six furlongs on Aug. 9 and the $125,000 Susan’s Girl going seven furlongs on Sept. 6 to become the first filly and fourth horse to sweep the series that was first run in 1982.
The Florida Stallion Stakes had previously been swept by Smile in 1984, Naked Greed in 1991 and Seacliff in 1995. They had each won the six-furlong Dr. Fager, seven-furlong Affirmed and In Reality going a mile-and-a-sixteenth to sweep their respective male divisions of the series.
Nancy Glitter had never been headed in the first two legs while producing a three-length victory in the Desert Vixen as the 2-5 favorite and winning the Susan’s Girl by a head as the odds-on favorite at 3-5.
Despite entering the gate for the My Dear Girl off a four-race win streak—she had won a maiden special weight by eight-and-a-half-lengths in June and the $50,000 Masao Moriya Stakes by seven-and-three-quarters lengths on July 19, both at Calder—Nancy’s Glitter was let go as the second choice at 2.9-1 behind Freak Man Stables’ B. K.’s Notebook at 2.4-1.
Nancy’s Glitter broke third from post nine in the My Dear Girl then Rodriguez sent her to the front to lead by two lengths around the first turn and down the backstretch. They set comfortable quarter-mile fractions of :23.50 and :48.97 as longshot Diablo’s Bobett chased in second with B. K’s Notebook six lengths back in eighth. Nancy’s Glitter expanded her lead to two-and-a-half lengths through six furlongs in 1:13.71 then cruised home to win by four lengths in 1:48.75. Copelan’s Angel had taken second coming out of the turn but could not chase down Nancy’s Glitter, finishing five-and-a-half lengths ahead of Star’s Proud Penny in third with B. K.’s Notebook fourth.
Nancy’s Glitter paid $7.80 to win.
Trainer Frank Knibbs sent Nancy’s Glitter to Southern California for the $943,480 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (Grade 1), but after pressing the pace, she faded in the second turn and finished 12th behind winner e. She would start eight times in 1998 with her best race coming when third in the $29,600 Mia’s Hope at Calder in July. She started three more times as a 4-year-old in 1999 with one third in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park in January.
Nancy’s Glitter retired with earnings of $477,971 from five wins, two seconds and two thirds in 20 career starts.
In November of 1999, she sold for $160,000 to Mark Stansell at the Keeneland November Sale of Breeding Stock and in 2000, she again sold during the Keeneland November Sale of Breeding Stock where she was purchased by Omar Trevino Bloodstock for $325,000 in foal to Forestry. Nancy’s Glitter would produce eight foals including six winners from seven starters. Florida-bred Conway Two Step, by Spanish Steps, was her only stakes winner.
