Wekiva Springs Wins the Grade 2 San Fernando at Santa Anita

1995 – Dizney and English’s Florida-bred Wekiva Springs wins the Grade 2 San Fernando by a length-and-a-half at Santa Anita with jockey Kent Desormeaux aboard.
After finishing sixth in his career debut at Del Mar in September of 1993, the Donald R. Dizney-bred son of Runaway Groom rattled off six consecutive wins, culminating with the $216,800 San Fernando for trainer Robert Hess Jr. Dramatic Gold was second with Dare and Go third while 7-5 favorite Strokes Creek finished fourth.
It was also the second consecutive graded-stakes victory for Wekiva Springs, who had won the Grade 3 Vernon O. Underwood Breeders’ Cup at Hollywood Park on Dec. 10, 1994 in his previous start.
Wekiva Springs was out of Jetting Angel, by Tri Jet and retired with earnings of $1,512,575 from 10 wins, four seconds and two thirds in 21 starts including Grade 1 victories in the 1996 Gulfstream Park Handicap and 1996 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park.
