Sir Bear Wins the Grade 3 Skip Away

2002 – Florida-bred Sir Bear wins the last of his 10 career graded stakes victories in the Grade 3 Skip Away Handicap at Gulfstream Park, paying $20.20 to win at odds of 9-1.

The then 9-year-old gelding came from last of eight with jockey Edgar Prado aboard to win the Skip Away by a half-length ahead of two other millionaires in Red Bullet in second with Florida-bred Hal’s Hope third.

Sir Bear was trained by Ralph Ziadie for owner Barbara Smollin and was bred in Florida by A. L. Smollin. By Sir Leon out of Spicy Pearl, by Bet Big, Sir Bear retired with earnings of $2,538,422 from 19 wins, 12 seconds and 14 thirds in 71 career starts.
