FEBRUARY 15, 1989—Florida-bred Pistols and Roses, an earner of $1,680,506, is foaled in Florida for breeder Happy Alter.
By Darn That Alarm out of To Be Continued, by Princely Pleasure, Pistols and Roses won his first race at Calder Race Course on Sept. 21, 1991 for trainer George Gianos and owner Willis Family Racing, who campaigned the grey colt throughout his 44-race career.
After two unsuccessful starts in allowance company in October, Pistols and Roses won an allowance race at Hialeah, beginning a four-race win streak that continued with victories in the $50,000 Bahamas (Listed) on Nov. 30, the $100,000 Everglades (Listed) on Dec. 21 and the $400,000 Flamingo on Jan. 4, all at Hialeah.
He then finished third but was placed second in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth on Feb. 22 before coming in third in Technology’s Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 14, both at Gulfstream. Pistols and Roses rebounded to win the $500,000 Blue Grass (G2) at Keeneland on April 11 but tired to finish 16th in the $974,800 Kentucky Derby (G1) won by Lil E. Tee at Churchill Downs on May 2.
Pistols and Rose would go onto to win the Grade 1 Donn Handicap in 1993–’94 and the Grade 3 Ben Ali at Keeneland in 1994.
He retired with 10 wins, four seconds and six thirds.
