Ocean Vision (IRE) (U S Navy Flag – Balaagha, by Mr. Greeley) gives Florida breeders a different kind of stallion prospect to study. Standing at JR Ranch, the son of U S Navy Flag brings international form, juvenile speed and a female family with serious black-type depth, offering a blend of turf sharpness, American influence and race-tested toughness that fits a market always looking for useful options beyond the obvious.
AT THE RACES
Bred by Mighty Universe Ltd, Ocean Vision originally campaigned in Shadwell Stables’ colors. The precocious 2-year-old captured his April debut, traveling five furlongs at Dundalk Racecourse in Ireland and was the initial winner for his first-crop sire. A world traveler, Ocean Vision was a two-time Listed winner and multiple Group-placed in Europe and Doha, Qatar.
Purchased out of the 2023 Geoffs London Sale to Marquee Bloodstock for Jose Aguirre’s JR Ranch, Ocean Vision went to Saratoga for a shot in the Grade 2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes.
Ramiro Restrepo, Jose Aguirre’s racing and bloodstock manager, recalled the circumstances.
“What’s crazy is that the day that he arrived, it rained, and they canceled the race in the paddock and he had to stay in the quarantine bar an extra week,” Restrepo said. “Oisin Murphy, who was lined up to ride him, couldn’t ride him. Now you have to adjust the preparations on the fly.” Due to the week-long setback, Ocean Vision was overeager during the race but closed from last while on the wrong lead for fourth place.
Unfortunately, Ocean Vision bowed a tendon in his final start, a handicap race over Gulfstream Park’s all-weather track. The globetrotter earned $196,764 in 13 starts, hitting the board six times.
PEDIGREE
Ramiro Restrepo stated that Ocean Vision is “a little over 15.3 1/2 hands high and looks a lot more like the War Front line. His pedigree has a ton of class, (with) American influence(s).”
U S Navy Flag (War Front – Misty For Me (Ire), by Galileo (Ire)) was bred in the US and competed for Coolmore, Tabor and Wynaus and made his mark on the racing world as an elite sprinter.
He was an ultra-tough 2-year-old, racing 11 times for Aidan O’Brien and the Coolmore partners, with gritty wins in the Group 1 Middle Park and Dewhurst Stakes, and Grade 3 Round Tower Stakes, all sprints.
The son of War Front also proved a top-class performer as a 3-year-old, winning the July Cup and placing second to Romanised in the one-mile Irish 2,000 Guineas. He retired to Coolmore in 2019 with $1,341,752 from 19 starts.
It’s no surprise that U S Navy Flag was such a precocious sprinter, considering that his dam Misty For Me (Galileo (Ire) – Butterfly Cove, by Storm Cat) was the 2010 Cartier Champion 2-Year-Old Filly in Europe. His older full sister, Roly Poly, was a multiple group winner as a 2-year-old and added a trio of Group 1 contests to her resume, all between six furlongs and a mile.
Ocean Vision is the only starter based on the U S Navy Flag – Mr. Greeley bloodline cross. However, his sire War Front had moderate success with the cross, with six winners from as many starters.
The bottom side of Ocean Vision’s pedigree is a mix of precocious class. His damsire, Mr. Greeley, was a consistent feature on the leading broodmare sire lists. Second damsire Eastern Echo was noted for getting precocious sprinters, and Ocean Vision’s fifth dam, Leallah, was a Champion 2-year-old filly. Balancing out the speed is Champion 3-year-old and Intermediate/Classic Chef de Race, Sir Ivor.
Ocean Vision is the eighth foal out of the winning and Listed-placed Balaagha (Mr. Greeley – Echo Echo Echo, by Eastern Echo), who was bred by Adrie Stud and raced in the colors of the late Hamdan Al Maktoum and cost Shadwell $750,000 from the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2007.
Balaagha is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner and top-class producer Letgomyecho (Menifee), the dam of 2021 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine Echo Zulu (Gun Runner), who was undefeated in her first five starts, including the Fair Grounds Oaks (G3).
After finishing fourth in the 2022 Kentucky Oaks, Echo Zulu won four additional graded stakes and closed for second in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint behind 2022 and eventual 2023 Champion Female Sprinter Goodnight Olive. Echo Zulu closed her career with a widening two-and-a-half length victory over that rival in the Ballerina Handicap (G1).
Letgomyecho bore four other black-type earners, including Grade 1-winning sprinter and sire, Echo Town (Speightstown), and Grade 3-winner J Boys Echo (Mineshaft).
Balaagha’s half-sister Soundwave (Friends Lake) was a stakes-winning juvenile, and her son Dean Martini (Cairo Prince) captured the mile-and-an-eighth Ohio Derby (G1) and the mile-and-a-quarter Japan Turf Cup Stakes at Laurel Park
Mr. Greeley consistently ranked at the top of the broodmare sire lists, and is represented by some of the world’s most elite athletes, including 2020 Horse of the Year and Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (G1)-winner, Authentic (Into Mischief), three-time Grade 1 winning turf horse Raging Bull (Dark Angel), plus multiple Grade 1 heroines Zazu (Tapit) and Ria Antonia (Rockport Harbor).
AT STUD
Ocean Vision is standing his first year at stud in 2026 at JR Ranch. For Florida breeders looking to add turf speed, international class and a fresh outcross, Ocean Vision gives them a new and intriguing option for the 2027 breeding season.
