Disqualified and placed second after crossing the wire first in the $77,000 Dover Stakes last out, Florida-bred Snowhomish looks for redemption Saturday at Monmouth Park in the $100,000 Sapling versus eight other 2-year-olds going a mile. Trained by Jorge Delgado, the Florida-bred colt is owned and was bred by Paula and Charles Cosgrove of Wadsworth, Ohio in the name of their Lea Farms.
An out-of-state victory in the Sapling would also earn the Cosgroves as breeders a $4,000 Export Incentive from the Florida Thoroughbred Owners’ and Breeders’ Association.
Snowhomish first turned heads in a $25,000 maiden claiming going five-and-a-half furlongs at Delaware Park on July 31, shaking off pressure through the first two furlongs to draw off and win by eight-and-a-half lengths.
The dark bay or brown son of Rock Your World then ran down a front-running Tatters in the stretch of the six-furlong Dover at Delaware Park. However, Snowhomish drifted in and bumped Tatters at the eighth-pole and was subsequently disqualified and placed second for interference.
Out of Pocket Book, by Into Mischief, Snowhomish has earned $29,400 in his two races and is the 3-1 second choice on the morning line for the Sapling.
Delgado has named Daniel Centeno to ride Snowhomish for the first time and they will start from post three.
Favored at 5-2 in the program is Gorillaz, who comes into the Sapling off a fourth-place finish in a six-and-a-half-furlong maiden special weight at Saratoga on August 8 in his only start.
Trained and owned in partnership by Danny Gargan with Pine Racing and Belmar Racing and Breeding, Gorillaz is a bay son of Bolt d’Oro out of Rockadelic, by Bernardini.
Luis R. Rivera Jr. will ride Gorillaz from post two.
Completing the entries are Best Deal with Francisco Martinez taking the riding assignment, jockey Jorge Vargas Jr. teams with Sea Devil, Rasasi will have Jesus Rios up, no rider is named on Sawyer’s Song, Hes Steelin Mylady will have Mitchell Murrill aboard, Raku has Jose Ferrer taking the call and Reylu Gutierrez will guide Chasing the Son.
