OCALA, FL— Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association CEO Lonny Powell has been elected Vice Chair of the Animal Industry Working Group, an advisory board administered by the Division of Animal Industry under the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

For Powell, 2027 will mark the 15th year serving as the Equine Representative for the AIWG. 

The AIWG advises Division Director, state veterinarian Dr. Michael Short, and the Florida Commissioner of Agriculture on the needs, challenges and concerns of Florida’s diverse animal and livestock industries. Discussions frequently focus on animal health regulations, disease surveillance, laboratory initiatives, committee recommendations and advancing animal disease traceability. The AIWG brings together state regulators, federal partners (such as the USDA) and representatives/stakeholder from commercial and private animal industries.

“Powell brings extensive experience and a strong understanding of Florida’s animal industries to this role,” Dr. Short said. “His experience in the equine industry and his longstanding service on the working group will be a valuable asset as we work together to protect animal health and Florida’s animal industries.”

Powell’s agriculture history runs deep. He was raised in a horse racing family, is a past president of the Idaho Future Farmers of America and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Arizona. He also served as member of animal science faculty at the University of Arizona as director of the iconic Race Track Industry Program. As a pleasure and show-horse owner, Powell has been widely recognized by industry groups for his service to people, animals and industry. His recognition includes the 2022 American Horse Council Van Ness Award and the 2022 Florida Society of Association Executives, Executive of the Year, the Racing Commissioners International William H. May Award, the University of Arizona John K. Goodman Outstanding Alumni Award and the University of Arizona President’s Club Award.

Since coming to Florida, Powell has been appointed by three consecutive Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services Commissioners to serve as a Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of the Florida Horse Park and Agricultural Authority.
