Nov. 20, 1940-Oct. 26, 2025
Georg E. Maharg II, 84, died in Gainesville, Florida on October 26, 2025.
Georg was born in Dayton, Ohio on Nov. 20, 1940 to Georg and Virginia Maharg. Georg attended Fairmont High School in Kettering, Ohio, before graduating with a degree in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University.
Georg was an entrepreneur, contractor and real estate broker in both Ohio and Florida, and employed hundreds of people over decades in business. He founded several enterprises that built and managed multi-family housing and other buildings in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.
Georg also had success racing sailboats, motorcycles and racecars and was a private pilot.
Georg had a lifelong love of horses. Georg and his wife, Sharon, bred and raced Quarter Horses in Ohio in the 1970s and early 1980s. He “retired” to Ocala, Fla., buying a farm, which he named Gemwood, where Georg and Sharon bred Thoroughbreds. They became active members of the Thoroughbred racing and breeding community in Marion County. Georg was happiest at Gemwood, looking out at his mares from the window by his desk or mowing the pastures on his tractor.
Georg was an ever-present father who loved and supported his children.
Georg is survived by his wife, Sharon Maharg; his children, Georg Maharg III, Erica Maharg and David Eborg; his grandchildren, Samantha and Dillan Eborg; and his sister, Dorothy Rapp.
A memorial service was held on Nov. 2. Donations to the Horse Protection Association of Florida would be greatly appreciated. Georg will be laid to rest at Woodland Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio.
