Dennis Manning’s journey in the Thoroughbred racing industry is a testament to a lifelong passion, deeply rooted in family and a natural affinity for horses. Growing up next to the Weymouth Fairgrounds in Massachusetts, Dennis was immersed in the world of horse racing from an early age.
What began as childhood curiosity soon transformed into a professional calling.
His first taste of victory came at the Marshfield Fair—a moment etched in his memory. He would often share the story of how he won his first race at the Marshfield Fair in Marshfield, Mass., on a half-mile racetrack. It was a $600 race—$360 to the winner—and he won it riding a 13-year-old. Dennis’s entrepreneurial spirit later led him to purchase his first racehorse, a decision that would shape the course of his career.
He spent his first winter racing in Maryland. The following winter, he decided to try Florida, traveling to Ocala, where he spent the season. For several years, he continued this routine—shuttling back up north in the spring with about 40 horses.
As the New England racing scene evolved, Dennis adapted. He relocated his operations, moving through various circuits—from Meadowlands to Monmouth Park, then to Maryland, and eventually to Florida. His wife fell in love with Ocala, which became their permanent home.
Among his many achievements, two horses stand out: Valid Video and Grand Hombre.
Dennis won the 2003 King’s Bishop (Grade 1) at Saratoga, with Valid Video—defeating Ghostzapper, something he was especially proud of. Just 10 days later, he returned with Grand Hombre to win the Pennsylvania Derby (G3) at Philadelphia Park.
What he enjoyed most about being in the racing industry was taking a young horse—typically a 2-year-old—and helping it reach its full potential, while watching it grow and develop along the way. That was his passion—he loved watching them succeed.
A pivotal moment came when his friend Bob Nelson developed the Oak Ridge Training Center. Dennis remained in Florida, helping operate Oak Ridge year-round. Eventually, he was elected president of the Oak Ridge board of directors.
Dennis will be deeply missed—not only within the racing industry, but by all those he mentored, supported and loved Dennis.
