Vicente Stella Stables homebred Mon Coquette turned away a challenge from Rosie’s Roadster at the top the stretch then kicked clear in the lane to win a $65,000 maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies bred in Florida at Gulfstream Park Saturday. Trained by Victor Barboza Jr. and ridden by Samy Camacho, Mon Coquette completed the five furlongs in :59.68 on the fast track.
Rosie’s Roadster started best from post five but was quickly passed by Mon Coquette, who also began well from post one in the field of six.
Mon Coquette was a length in front of Rosie’s Roadster through a :22.39 first quarter mile until Miguel Vasquez and Rosie’s Roadster drew closer from the two path coming out of the turn. Mon Coquette pulled away again in the run for home to win by two-and-a-half lengths with Rosie’s Roadster finishing second. Full Moon Rebel was three-and-three-quarters-lengths farther back in third followed by Liberty Run, Jost a Chance Yadi and Sheila Magic. Pastel was scratched.
Mon Coquette paid $5.80 to win.
Mon Coquette is by Omaha Beach out of Starcloud, by Backtalk and earned $39,000 for the win. A winner of the 2018 Game Face at Gulfstream Park, Starcloud earned $163,365 on the track. Mon Coquette is her first winner from two starters and four foals. Starcloud has an unnamed yearling colt by Vekoma, also bred in Florida by Vicente Stella Stables. She was bred to Ocala Stud’s Khozan in 2026.
