The Thoroughbred industry is often described as more of a way of life than just a job, and Jessica Smith’s story truly reflects that idea. As a fourth-generation horsewoman, she represents a family legacy built on tradition, resilience and a deep love for the horse.

Her great-grandfather trained horses for the King of Italy before immigrating to the United States where the family continued its involvement in racing and training. Over time, that passion carried through and eventually brought the family to Ocala, Florida. By the time Jessica was born, horses were already a constant part of her life, shaping her upbringing from the very beginning.

As the family operation grew, Jessica’s parents, Steve and Kathryn Lombardi with Fox Point Farm, expanded into breeding alongside training, which gave her the chance to experience many different sides of the industry. From attending sales and visiting breeding farms to traveling to racetracks across the country, Jessica learned early on that every decision affects not only the business but the horse as well. These hands-on experiences provided lessons that simply can’t be taught in a classroom and helped shape the way she views the industry today.

Now, Jessica and her husband Justin and daughter Morgan operate a small Thoroughbred business that focuses on quality over quantity. Their approach is thoughtful and methodical, carefully evaluating bloodlines, breeding choices and racing plans while keeping the horse’s potential in mind. They balance commercial considerations with what is best for the horse, which reflects their respect for the industry and the animals at the heart of it.

When asked about her biggest achievements, Jessica doesn’t point to a single race win or milestones. Instead, she sees her greatest accomplishment as being part of a multi-generational tradition while continuing to learn. To her, success is shown by personal growth, integrity and the impact the industry has on people and communities.

Looking toward the future, Jessica remains hopeful about the direction of the Thoroughbred industry, especially in Florida. She believes the industry must continue to adapt while still honoring its traditions and she places strong value on welcoming the next generation.

That next generation includes Morgan, who is the fifth generation in Jessica’s family to be involved in the Thoroughbred industry. Morgan is already active through 4-H and is following three horses for her project. One horse of racing age, Bring an Alibi, and two broodmares, Awesome Mary and Foxy Austin. Curious, observant and passionate, Morgan represents a meaningful continuation of the family’s legacy and the future of the industry.

For Jessica, the Thoroughbred industry isn’t just a career, it’s a lifelong journey shaped by family, experience, and an unwavering love for the horse.
