Last down the backstretch and as many as eight lengths behind front-running Roar of the Beast, Florida-bred Lightning Tones made a dynamic move to circle the field around the far turn to win the $70,000 Black Diamond Cat overnight handicap going away at Gulfstream Park Saturday. Eight 3-year-olds and older went postward in the mile-and-sixteenth test.
Ridden by Miquel Vasquez for trainer Jose Castro, Lightning Tones won by a length-and-a-half ahead of Catalytic in second with Florida-bred Roar of the Beast six lengths farther back in third. Florida-bred Hades, the 8-5 favorite, was fourth followed by Florida-breds Smart Striker and Las Olas with Fiveeyesonskystars and Relampago Verde completing the order of finish.
Lightning Tones paid $12 to win while finishing in 1:42.48.
It was the first win for Lightning Tones since he took the mile-and-a-sixteenth, $75,000 Sunshine Classic by a length-and-a-quarter against Florida-breds at Gulfstream on Jan. 11. He has now won two of five starts this year with a third in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Mile won by Mindframe going a mile on March 1and a fourth in the Grade 3 Ghostzapper taken by White Abarrio over a mile-and-a-sixteenth on March 29, both at Gulfstream.
Lightning Tones is by Tonalist out of Rosesandlightning, by Lightning N Thunder and was bred in Florida by H & A Stables LLC. He races for owner JC Racing Stable and has now won six of 29 career starts with six seconds and five thirds with earnings of $307,365.
