Led by Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint-winner Asher’s Edge, six Florida-breds will go postward in Saturday’s $70,000 Chasing Artie overnight handicap for eight 3-year-olds and older racing five-and-a-half furlongs on the synthetic course.
Trained by David Fawkes, the J J Brevan Stable homebred was a two-and-three-quarters-length winner of the $75,000 Bob Umphrey, which was switched from turf to five furlongs on the all-weather course on Sept. 20. Jockey Edwin Gonzalez had Asher’s Edge in the two path to press Florida-bred Cruzin Man through a :21.62 quarter mile before pulling away in the run for home to finish in :56.08.
It was the fourth career win in 14 starts for the 4-year-old son of Competitive Edge and pushed his earnings to $212,170 while also logging three seconds and three thirds. He is out of Donelle, by Roman Ruler.
Assigned the high weight of 121 pounds and conceding between one and seven pounds to his seven rivals, Asher’s Edge will again be ridden by Gonzalez and has drawn the inside post one.
Florida-bred And Uwish and Knockanara have each been assigned 120 pounds.
And Uwish looks for his second overnight handicap victory sprinting on synthetic after winning the $70,000 Successful Native at the same distance on July 6. The 4-year-old son of Mshawish returns to sprinting after an unsuccessful try around two turns in his last start when last of eight in the $70,000 Mambo Meister overnight handicap over a mile-and-a-70-yards at Gulfstream on Sept. 6. In one start between the Successful Native and Mambo Meister, the Joseph Orseno trainee was second to Florida-bred Reef Runner in the $70,000 Warrior’s Pride overnight handicap at Gulfstream on Aug. 25.
Reef Runner has since won the Grade 2 Eddie D at Santa Anita Park on Sept. 27 and was fourth behind winner Shisospicy in the Grade 1 Prevagen Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club on Nov. 1.
And Uwish is out of the Grand Slam mare Elective and was bred in Florida by Adam Parker and Suzette Parker, who own the bay gelding with Orseno. And Uwish has earned $144,260 while winning three with two seconds in eight races lifetime.
And Uwish has drawn post seven and will be ridden for the sixth consecutive time by Edgard Zayas.
Reid Nagle’s Knockanara makes his first start at Gulfstream for trainer Sarah Nagle. The 4-year-old son of Gun Runner exits a half-length loss to winner Dancing Buck when third in the $150,000 Turf Sprint Championship going six furlongs during the Belmont at Big A meet on Nov. 1. In his previous start, Knockanara won a first condition allowance at the same distance at Laurel Park on Sept. 12, but was disqualified and placed second.
Knockanara will be ridden by Micah Husbands from post two.
