Claire Potvin participated in the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover in Lexington, Ky. on Wednesday with her retired Florida-bred racehorse Soulful Song in the competitive trail class division.
The gelding retired from racing on July 11, 2022, after finishing in the back of the pack in six races. Potvin was looking for a companion to another family horse and found Soulful Song for sale on Facebook. She met the horse and noticed his kind temperament. After a vet check, he was in his new home and began his process of retraining.
The 4-year-old is by Songandaprayer out of Living Light, by Halo’s Image, was bred by Shade Tree Thoroughbreds Inc. and raced for Gerald James and Jaquel Saunders.
“It was a little chilly for my Florida boy yesterday morning in Kentucky (41 degrees) but overall he was a good boy in a big setting! We got hung up on dismounting and getting back on in our trail class. But was a great experience for us,” his current owner Potvin said.
“He has taught me so much about not only Thoroughbreds and horses, but life in general,” Potvin continued. “Throughout it all, his demeanor amazes me. He is always eager to learn and constantly teaching me as an amateur trainer. I have learned how much this breed wants to please and what big hearts they have. My husband and two year old daughter have been along for the re-training as well.”
