Wathnan Racing’s Spiralizer made a notable debut at Churchill Downs Thursday with a two-length victory in a five-furlong maiden special weight against five other 2-year-olds.
Ridden by Tyler Gaffalione for trainer Steve Asmussen, the Florida-bred son of Twirling Candy led from the start and was a length clear of Hedge in second through a quarter mile in :22.86. He stretched his margin to two lengths around the turn and finished evenly while remaining two lengths clear of a late running Asleep At Eight in second in a final time of :58.48 on the fast track.
Spiralizer was sent to the post as the 8-5 favorite and returned $5.42 to win.
Bred in Florida by Bridlewood Farm, Spiralizer earned $42,000 for the victory.
Spiralizer was a $550,000 purchase by Case Clay Thoroughbred Management at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales March Sale where he was consigned by Eddie Woods. He sold for $250,000 to Quarter Pole Enterprises at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale where he was consigned by Denali Stud.
