Ironhorse Racing LLC and Harlow Stables LLC’s Mattingly will try to live up to his 2-1 morning line odds when the Florida-bred colt goes postward in the $100,000 My Frenchman for 3-year-olds sprinting five-and-a-half furlongs on the turf at Monmouth Park Sunday.
Mattingly will be making his third start of the year and first since finishing second, a neck shy of Smokey Smokey, in the $150,000 Paradise Creek going six furlongs during the Belmont at Big A meet on May 19. In his first start of the year on April 7, the Joe Orseno trainee was fifth, but less than three lengths behind winner Fandom in the $207,000 Palisades going five-and-a-half furlongs on a good turf course at Keeneland.
Last year, Mattingly competed against stakes company in five of his six starts, winning the $90,000 Hollywood Beach going five furlongs on the Gulfstream Park synthetic in September. He was also second three times including in the $100,000 Royal Palm Juvenile won by No Nay Mets (Ire) at Gulfstream Park in his first career start going five furlongs on the turf. He was also second to Pipit in the CA$126,000 Victoria on the synthetic main track at Woodbine and second to Florida-bred Bentornato in the $200,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Affirmed behind winner Bentornato.
Mattingly is by Bucchero out of Battingstar, by Grand Slam and was bred in Florida by Lance Colwell. He has won two with four seconds in eight starts while banking $240,503.
He was a $70,000 purchase by Ironhorse Racing Stable out of the Two Oaks Equine consignment at last year’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales March Sale.
Mattingly has post five and jockey Paco Lopez.
Cheyenne Stable LLC’s Apollo Ten is the 5-2 second choice after also finishing second in his last race.
The son of Violence finished less than two lengths behind winner Ponce de Leon in the $80,000 Tom Ridge going six furlongs at Presque Isle Downs on June 17 after winning a first condition, $75,000 optional claiming going five furlongs on the Gulfstream Park turf on April 18.
Apollo Ten is trained by Christophe Clement and has won two of five lifetime starts with one second and earnings of $100,150.

Others entered for the My Frenchman are Roi Soleil with jockey Julio Hernandez, Bolt of Aurum and rider Fernando Jara, Samy Camacho rides Glacial Power and Feltrinelli will be ridden by Joe Bravo.
