Second against maidens in her last four tries, Florida-bred Good Long Cry won emphatically Thursday with a six-and-a-quarter-length victory on the Aqueduct turf. Ridden to victory by Irad Ortiz Jr., Good Long Cry won a mile-and-a-sixteenth maiden special weight against nine other 2-year-old fillies to earn the winner’s share of the $90,000 purse.

Good Long Cry raced in second, three lengths behind frontrunner On a Summer Day, through a half mile in :48.39 before beginning to close the gap on that rival round the far turn. She collared On a Summer Day with a quarter mile to the finish then drew off to win in 1:44.05 on the firm turf with Chelsey’s Choice second and Olatz (GB) third.

Good Long Cry was the 6-5 favorite and paid $4.60 to win.

While Good Long Cry was winless in her first five starts, the daughter of Long On Value had been racing against talented rivals.

Trainer George Weaver believed Good Long Cry had potential from the start as she debuted in the $106,000 Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies going five furlongs on the turf at Gulfstream Park in May. She finished fifth behind winner Bullet, who would win the $95,714 My Dear Stakes at Woodbine in her next start.

She was also just a length shy of winner Reining Flowers in a maiden special weight going a mile-and-a-sixteenth on the turf at Saratoga in July. That rival went on to finish third in the $150,000 P. G. Johnson at Saratoga in August.

In her next race at the same distance on the turf at Saratoga on Sept. 1, Good Long Cry was just a half-length behind future stakes-winner Opulent Restraint in a maiden special weight.

Good Long Cry has now earned $124,795 with a record of one win and four seconds in six starts for owner Black Type Thoroughbreds, Swinbank Stables LLC, Steve Adkisson and Scott C. Rice. She is out of High Cry, by Street Cry (Ire) and was bred in Florida by Sabana Farm LLC.

She sold for $53,000 to Maddie Mattmiller as agent at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Select Yearling Sale where she was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency.
