OCALA, FL—Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis showed continued support for the Florida Thoroughbred industry in an appearance with his family Thursday at Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company. Accompanied by wife Casey, son Mason and daughter Madison, DeSantis addressed a crowd of national Thoroughbred stakeholders assembled at OBS just prior to day three of the prestigious OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in training.
“It’s exciting to see the state do so well,” DeSantis said. “And you know during COVID, this industry really [was] strong. People were flooding to Wellington and to Ocala. This was like the respite. So obviously we capitalized off siding with freedom. We’ve delivered successes and it’s great. But you can never rest on your laurels.”
DeSantis also addressed his concern regarding the decoupling bills currently in the Florida Legislature.
“On the issue of horses, it seems to me that [the Florida Legislature is] basically having proposals that have the effect of harming the industry here in Florida to basically benefit one special interest. That’s not how you do good policy,” DeSantis said.
“So we’re watching all of this very carefully and I’m playing the role now of having delivered a lot of successes that we’re going to try to build on the best we can. But I’m having to play the role now of protecting the people of Florida from any sabotage that is being done in the Florida House of Representatives.
“I understand the importance of the industry to the state. Not just in terms of the economy, that’s important. But it’s a culture and way of life that people have known for many generations.
“You can count on me as one that is not going to look favorably on the legislation that’s going to decimate any of our industries.”
Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association CEO Lonny Powell expressed his gratitude to the Governor for his continued support of the Florida Thoroughbred industry.
“We’re deeply grateful to the Governor for recognizing the deep-rooted significance of our signature industry,” Powell said. “His steadfast support for our breeders, owners and horsemen reaffirms his commitment to preserving proud Florida traditions and securing a strong future for Florida jobs and agriculture.”
Ocala Stud General Manager David O’Farrell, who also sold a colt by Vekoma for $750,000 from his Ocala Stud consignment Thursday, was among those speaking with DeSantis at OBS.
“It’s been a really good day for our industry,” O’Farrell said. “It’s great for OBS and just showing strength that we’re here, we’re a viable business. It was great to show him the commerce taking place in Ocala. Showing him what our industry is all about.
“I’m not going to rest comfortably until it’s over, until the legislative session ends or the bills actually die. But I definitely think it puts our nose in front if you will. To know that we have the Governor on our side as a huge ally and supports our business is a huge win for the industry.”
