Unsuccessful against graded stakes company in her last race, Dave McGinn’s homebred Chick’s Shadow enters against easier foes Saturday in the $100,000 All Along going nine furlongs on the grass at Laurel Park. Trained by Angel Rodriguez, Florida-bred Chick’s Shadow is 6-1 on the morning line among seven fillies and mares, 3-years-old and older.
The 8-year-old Chick’s Shadow shortens up in the All Along after her sixth-place finish behind winner Charlene’s Dream in the mile-and-three-sixteenths Beverly D. (Grade 2) at Colonial Downs on Aug. 9. Her best race in six starts this year came at a mile-and-an-eighth two starts back when second to Avenue Niel (Ire) in an upper level, $75,000 optional claiming at Colonial Downs on July 11. After stumbling at the start, Chick’s Shadow came from six lengths back to get second in the mile-and-a-sixteenth contest on the grass.
An earner of $348,173 in 55 career starts for McGinn, Chick’s Shadow looks for her first victory since August of last year when taking the $70,000 Frolic’s Revenge overnight handicap by a length-and-three-quarters going a mile-and-70-yards on the Gulfstream Park all-weather course.
Chick’s Shadow is by Seek Again out of Dick’s Chick, by Shuailaan and has nine career wins, eight seconds and 12 thirds.
Jose Lopez has ridden Chick’s Shadow in her last two outs and gets the return mount here. They will break from post three.
Bridlewood Farm and Madaket Stables’ No Show Sammy Jo (GB) is the morning line favorite with 9-5 odds but her last win came in the 2024 All Along.
No Show Sammy Jo too exits graded company having finished fourth in the Grade 2 Glen Falls won by La Mehana (Fr) going a mile-and-a-half over a yielding turf at Saratoga on July 27. She was also second to La Mehana just prior to the Glen Falls going a mile-and-three-eighths on the grass during the Belmont at Big A meet on June 27.
In five starts since taking last year’s All Along, No Show Sammy Jo has two seconds including when a nose shy of winner Be Your Best (Ire) in the mile-and-three-eighths Long Island (G3) over the Aqueduct turf on Nov. 10.
No Show Sammy Jo is trained by Graham Motion and the 5-year-old mare will be ridden from post six by Jorge Ruiz.
She is by Lope de Vega (Ire) and has four wins and two seconds in 10 lifetime starts with earnings of $318,050.
Completing the All Along entries are Sirona (Ger) with Daniel Centeno up, Jevian Toledo rides Cut From Class, Mopo does not have a ride named at press time, Horacio Karamanos rides Venomous Vixen and For Arrogate will have Vincent Cheminaud in the irons.
