Super Sicily, a Florida-bred daughter of Ocala Stud stallion Awesome Slew, won a US$56,299 maiden special weight by a length at Woodbine Sept. 24 after leading at every point of call with jockey Leo Salles aboard. The 3-year-old filly defeated nine rivals, all colts and geldings 3-years-old and older, going six furlongs on the synthetic main course for trainer Abraham Katryan, who co-owns the filly with breeder Murray Stroud.

The chestnut filly broke well from post six and promptly sprinted to a length-and-a-quarter lead ahead of 5-2 favorite Park Place in second with Kid Marvelous another three-quarters of a length farther back in third on the outside.

After a quarter-mile in :22.95, Park Place advanced in the two path to challenge Super Sicily around the turn and those two hit the top of the stretch heads apart.

But Super Sicily scampered clear in the run for home to win as the fourth choice in the wagering at 5-1. Park Place finished second, a length-and-a-quarter ahead of Midnight Tempesta in third. Town’s Warrior, Kid Marvelous, Florida-bred This Dude a Breeze, Last Monarch, Cinnamon Bits and Dare to Be King completed the order of finish.

Super Sicily paid $13.10 to win while capturing her fifth career start with two seconds and boosting her career earnings to $45,869.
