A 40-minute delay and change in race distance was no deterrent for Florida-bred Liam’s Law, who became the first winner for his sire, Ocala Stud’s Colonel Liam, with a gate-to-wire victory in a maiden special weight on the inner turf at Saratoga Race Course Sunday. Trained by Todd Pletcher for Robert E. and Lawana L. Low, Liam’s Law took the winner’s share of the $115,000 purse as the best of ten 2-year-olds going a mile-and-a-sixteenth.
With the out-of-state victory in a maiden special weight, Liam’s Law also earned a $3,000 Export Incentive paid to breeder Ocala Stud by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association.
He is the second Florida-bred winner of a maiden special weight for juveniles on the inner turf at Saratoga in three days after Pros and Cons won for owner D. J. Stable and breeder Vegso Racing Stable on Friday.
Jockey Flavien Prat sent Liam’s Law to front from the start and withstood pressure from Antonelli through quarter-mile splits of :22.47, :48.90 and 1:13.51. They spurted off to a two-and-a-half-length margin in the stretch then confidently held on to win by a length-and-a-quarter as And the Runner Is came on late to get second. Berta’s Stitch was third.
Liam’s Law finished up in 1:42.74 on the firm turf and paid $6.20 to win.
It was the second start for Liam’s Law, who debuted with a fourth behind winner Ashcroft Lane in a five-and-a-half-furlong maiden special weight on the outer turf during the Belmont at Big A meet at Aqueduct on May 24.
Liam’s Law was a $120,000 purchase by West Bloodstock as an agent for the Lows at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales March Sale where he was consigned by Ocala Stud.
He is out of the winning Kitten’s Joy mare Quickasakitten, who has three starters, all winners, from six foals. She has an unnamed yearling filly by Ocala Stud’s Win Win Win and a weanling filly by Ocala Stud’s Adios Charlie. She was bred to Ocala Stud’s hot freshman sire Roadster this year.
