With just two starts to her credit, Splendid Sound is the least-experienced horse entered in Saturday’s $150,000 Herecomesthebride Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park. But many Marion County racing fans know that the filly shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Splendid Sound made her stakes debut in the $100,000 fillies’ division of the OBS Championship Stakes on Ocala’s day at the races Feb. 15, drawing off for a three-length victory. That race was her first over a synthetic surface, and she’ll return to turf for the Herecomesthebride, a nine-furlong test for 3-year-old fillies.
Splendid Sound finished third in her career debut at Gulfstream Park, a $75,000 maiden claimer on turf Jan. 7. She’s earned $62,340 through two starts for owner Charles H. Deters. Splendid Sound, a daughter of former Florida stallion Trippi, was bred by Phyllis Dudley and sold for $90,000 as a yearling at OBS in August 2008. She’s trained by Bill White.
Eibar Coa rode Splendid Sound to victory at OBS and will be aboard again Saturday when the filly breaks from the rail in a field of nine, with one additional runner entered for the main track only.
Starting next to her in post No. 2 will be Florida-bred Musical Romance, who finished sixth in the OBS Championship Stakes after pressing the pace early. She was bred by Ocala Stud Farm as a daughter of resident stallion Concorde’s Tune and is owned by Pinnacle Racing Stable and trainer Bill Kaplan.
Musical Romance was a $22,000 purchase at OBS last April. She’s won two of her eight starts for $55,565. Musical Romance began her sophomore season with a half-length victory over In the Rough in a $48,000 allowance on the Gulfstream lawn in January.
In the Rough returned Feb. 14 to capture the $125,000 Coconut Grove Stakes on the Gulfstream turf course, beating Check the Label by three-quarters of a length. Those two runners are entered in the Herecomesthebride.
Rounding out the field are Profiteroles, Upperline, Apple Charlotte, Khancord Kid and Dynazaper, with Tesoro de Amor entered for the main track only.
Khancord Kid won a $37,000 allowance on the Gulfstream grass in January before running fourth in the Coconut Grove, with Upperline one spot behind in fifth. Apple Charlotte has won two straight, including a $37,000 allowance on Gulfstream’s turf course Feb. 20.
